A Sad Indictment

I ran across an interesting bit on the blogosphere this morning.

Andrew Sullivan, a blogger/columnist/gay/Catholic/political conservative, comments on some of James Dobson's thoughts on the Federal Marriage Amendment.

He quotes Dobson as saying, "If the battle to protect marriage takes even five more years, liberal judges and activists will have destroyed this 5,000-year-old institution, which was designed by the Creator, Himself." Dobson also said, "Even now, they are close to achieving that coveted objective."

He then comments, "So the Creator of the universe is no match for liberal judges! And 5,000 years can be erased in half a decade. Whoever knew the judiciary had so much power?"

You can read the whole article here.

I agree with Dobson that marriage is a glorious institution established by God after the creation of Adam and Eve.

However, I also agree with Sullivan's comment. What kind of view of God do Dobson's comments represent? If God did sovereignly establish the institution of marriage (and he did), why can't we trust him to protect it?

Before you get the wrong idea, I'm NOT saying that Christians should not oppose gay marriage. I AM saying that that if we start believing that liberal judges can overturn the laws of the Creator of the universe, we believe in a puny God.

I appreciate your balanced perspective. Christians are to stand for the truth, but must trust in God to accomplish change, not their own efforts.

Good Commentary. This sure seems to be the right perspective with the issue, namely, that we are citizens of a foreign country with different standards of "good," "just," and "liberty."

Ben, excellent blog today! While Dobson's persepctive is very man-centered, thank you for pointing out the God-centered way we need to see things. Like your mom said, we must stand up and be bold for the truth, but must remember that we are not in any way defending a puny God. The Creator of the universe is the ultimate Judge. If we believe this truth, any efforts we make to protect the institution of marriage will fall in right perspective under His power and not our own ability.

Thanks so much for the comments, everyone!

Micah-
I agree that God is powerful and in-control whether gay marriage becomes legal or not. I also agree that divorce (many times caused by heterosexual immorality) is another huge attack on marriage. That's why divorce should be unheard of among Christians; that's why I'm against gay marriage. However, if gay marriage is legalized (and I hope it is not), I do not believe that marriage would be "destroyed," just like the church would not be destroyed if it was outlawed. God has ordained marriage, and while it may be under attack, what God has ordained will stand. Thanks for your comment; it helped me think this issue through a bit more.

well, seems like everybody's getting in on this action... I thought I'd throw my own 2 cents in...

Watching the current state of things, my bet is that gay marriage will probably be legalized within the next 5 years, no matter what political party gains the presidency in 2008... unless possibly the Supreme Court grows a spine.... Sad to say.

But, like you said Ben, the sun will rise, Marriage as we regard it will still exist, and most of all, God will be in control.

Sheesh, I haven't seen this many fundamental evangelicals commenting on a post since Phil Johnson ran Pyromaniac by himself! jk ;-)

Ah Beankles, that was an amazingly deep post. Quite a new perspective to put on things, a good one at that. Such wise words from one so young. Oh and by the by I'm still waiting for that call about travel plans... anyways, until then, keep it real.
